Fuqian Jing, the Academician of China Academy of Sciences, died on 20 April 2012, in Shanghai, China.

Fuqian Jing was 83 years old (1929.6.7-2012.4.20), and the birthplace was Huaiying, Jiangsu province, China. In 1952, he graduated from the Physics Department of Nanjing University, and then had been a teacher in Changchun College of Geology. In 1960, he moved to work at China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP) until the death. He was elected as the member of Academia Sinica in 1991, and then as the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences after 1993.

Fuqian Jing was a generally acknowledged leader in the high pressure physics field of China. His research activates covered a broad range of shock wave and detonation physics, including equation of state, constitutive relations, fracture of material, shock synthesis of material, and the earth science at high pressure and high temperature, etc. His works made great contributions to the understanding of condensed matter at the extreme condition of high pressure and high temperature.

Fuqian Jing was the pioneer of the academic exchanges between China and United States, Russia, Japan, and other countries. His sincerity was received recognition by many international friends. From the 1990s to 2000s, he was the advisory board member of the series publications of High-pressure Shock Compression of Condensed Matter, published by Springer-Verlag with the founding editor of Robert A. Graham. In 1989, he was the team leader of five-visitors and visited Los Alamos to open the door between CAEP and Los Alamos, that as recalled by Thomas C. Reed in Physics Today ("The Chinese unclear tests, 1964-1996", Physics Today, September 2008, p.47-53), and his journey has been named as the "ice - breaking journey".

Fuqian Jing devoted himself to the cultivation and education of high pressure physics throughout his life. He was the founder of the National Key Laboratory of Shock Wave and Detonation Physics in China, and now it is a well known laboratory in the international shock wave society. He wrote two books - "Introduction to the Experimental Equation of State" and "Dynamic High Pressure Principle and Technology", and now they are used as the teaching book of graduate students in many universities. He was one of the two originated chief editors of "Chinese Journal of High Pressure Physics", and now it is an
important journal in China.
