The responsibilities of this position are primarily focused on a research project on mineral physics studies of elasticity, strength, and plasticity mantle materials supported by an award from the National Science Foundation. The studies will be conducted at high pressures using diamond anvil apparatus coupled with optical and x-ray probes. This position will be based at the Geophysical Laboratory in Washington, D.C. Frequent and prolonged travels to national facilities, such as the Advanced Photon Source, the Advanced Light Source, the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource, and the National Synchrotron Light Source, as well as leading international facilities are expected for conducting the studies.

Minimum qualifications:
- A PhD degree in earth science, physics, chemistry, or materials science.
- Two years of postdoctoral experience or junior faculty equivalent in Mineral Physics.

Desired qualifications:
- Expertise in infrared and Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and x-ray topography.
- Familiar with diamond windows.
