Like most of my generation, I first became aware of Neil through his wonderful textbook Solid State Physics, by Ashcroft and Mermin. The book typifies Neil's ability to show not just what happens, but to guide the reader as to why it happens. Neil had a rigorous intuition which made his papers and passing asides a rare joy to read and to ponder.

This rare ability will be greatly missed.
